On the 25th of May 2024, we embarked on an unforgettable expedition to explore and measure the Kancha Gheri siphon, a vital water distribution system in the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW). This mechanism directs sewage flow to Tardaha Kapasati Mouza, the largest revenue village among the wetland mouzas in South 24 Parganas, according to the Census.
Our local guide, Bhola Mondal from Kantatala village, led us to an exciting discovery: a double siphon system. We found that while one siphon had become defunct over time, it could be easily repaired. This prompted us to bring the issue to the attention of the relevant authorities, aiming to ensure increased sewage availability for the farmers in Tardaha Kapasati Mouza.
